Virginia Wedding Designer: Understanding The Wedding Design Process

Virginia Wedding Designer: Keitha Thomas Designs, Understanding The Wedding Design Process.

Best Virginia Wedding Designer

As an Virginia event designer ( Keitha Thomas Designs) that specializes in design and florals, I not only assist my clients with choosing the right  wedding florals for there big day, but also guide them through the wedding design process. We get to know our clients through an extensive questionnaire to better understand their event style, interests, and what they want to convey with their wedding design and florals. Most couples getting married have ideas on color scheme and different elements that they want to incorporate, but aren’t sure how to put it all together. We take your ideas and make them cohesive, first by starting with an inspiration board so we know we’re on the right track, and then by delivering a fully detailed Wedding Design blueprint

Our Wedding Design blueprint becomes the vision for the team of vendors to follow. While your stationery vendor may only see the paper, and the linen vendor only sees the tables, as the wedding designer, we have the big picture in mind and lead the vendor team to bring all the components of the day together in one cohesive design. We help you maximize your budget by offering ideas and suggestions that will give you the biggest impact. There’s always the moment when reality sets in once we have all the design proposals and need to figure out where to cut to work within the budget. I help my clients understand what is essential and what they won’t miss on the wedding day. For example, lighting is always essential to an evening reception to create ambiance in a room. If your gorgeous flower arrangements are in the dark, what good was the money you spent? Scaling back a little on flowers to allow for lighting will create a dramatic effect and allow your flowers to shine in a dark room. Guiding our couples through the design process from concept to reality is one of the most gratifying aspects of what I do. I live for the moment when they see their wedding for the first time and it’s better than they dreamed it would be!

Virginia Wedding Floral Designer: Wedding Details Not To Overlook

Virginia Wedding Floral Designer: Wedding Details Not to Overlook

Virginia florist, Richmond Florist, Virginia Event Designer,  Richmond Event Designer, Wedding Planner, Florist, New York Floral designer,  Dc floral designer, Dc event designer, New York event designer,

When it comes to wedding planning we all pay attention to the big details and decisions like the venue, food, floor plans, music and flowers. But what about all of the finer details?

When you are pinning images to your Pinterest board, ask yourself what it is about the image that you like? Most often you will find it is the beautiful, more intricate details that are drawing you in, like the flowing silk ribbon on the bridal bouquet, the carefully folded napkin and sprig of herb at the place setting, the flicker of candles on the table, the sweet accents on the bride and groom’s chairs. These are the the top wedding details every bride should pay attention to.

Invitation Styling
Make sure to bring your invitation suite with you for your photographer to take a picture of, along with any sentimental elements they can style it alongside (like your grandmother’s locket). Request that your florist bring extra ribbon and a few blooms for your photographer to play with.

Jewelry and Accessories
Create time to focus on your accessories. If you’re lacking on time, hire a stylist to hone in on your vision and make it happen.

The Groom
Don’t let your groom rent. This should be his best looking day, too, not just yours. He needs to find a tux or suit that is his to keep – one that fits him perfectly and makes him feel top notch!

Floral Details
Talk through the finer details with your florist, like what your bouquets and bouts will be wrapped with (and how). Do you want long ribbons? Shiny or matte? Silk or organza? Unless it is specified, these details might not come out just like you’ve imagined.

Linens
A planner (or sometimes your florist) can help you pick out linens that will completely elevate the look of your event. We usually try to stay neutral color-wise, and bring in textures appropriate for the season. If you’re looking for a pop of color, why not add that in in the flowers or the napkins?

Lighting
Why pay $5,000 for flowers if you can barely notice them? If your guests are having to pull out their iphones to light the way at times, it also becomes a safety issue. Always ask about the lighting situation at your venue prior to booking, so you’re at least aware of it. Uplighting, pin lighting, or twinkling lights overhead can completely change the look and feel of your event.

Place setting
Even the napkin fold can completely change the look and feel of your table. We try to schedule a meeting around putting together the perfect place setting for your big day so we can think through all of the elements and logistics of how the food is being served. Renting chargers, a newer style of silverware, stunning glassware, etc can bump up your bill a bit. If you can’t afford it for each of your place settings, you could focus these special details on your head table for a fraction of the cost.

Votives
I know it seems like a small detail, but choosing votive containers that carry out your overall look is important. Your florist likely has several beautiful options – you just have to ask. They can really add a lot of personality to your wedding.

Chairs
Chairs are some of the most prevalent elements of your event. I would rather have a bride who puts her money towards nice chairs then use that money for giant floral centerpieces. It makes a big difference. Bad chairs can cheapen the look of your ceremony or reception. Also don’t forget to plan something special for your bride and groom chairs. It’s a fun moment to sit in those together, once you’re finally man and wife!

Table Numbers and Menus
Your day-of wedding paper should flow with your invitation suite or complement your centerpieces. Think through your flowers and their height and the containers used. How can you bring a table number into the mix that stands out without it taking away from the overall look? How are you going to alert your guests of the menu for the evening? Will it be a part of your table setting? Are you having easels with painted menus at each station? Or something unique? Think through the look you like and talk to your planner about something that makes sense logistically and stylistically.

Virginia Wedding Florist: SO MUCH MORE THAN FLOWERS

Virginia Wedding Florist: All The Ways Your Wedding Florist Can Help You

Today we explore the incredible versatility of the modern wedding florist.

In a day and age filled with beautiful blog inspiration, the typical couple is looking for something really special when it comes to décor – flowers, of course, but unforgettable linen pairings, snazzy lighting options, and unique favors, too.

That’s of course a wonderful thing to want. But what most brides and grooms don’t realize is how valuable a florist can be in achieving that wow-factor wedding.

Here at Keitha Thomas Designs we are much more than “just” florists, we are often design stylists, event planners, and production coordinators, too. Indeed, your wedding florist can be a profoundly impactful member of your production team – you just have to know what to ask for help with.

It is of course important to note that not every florist will be able to provide you with the full event design services described below, as the scope and infrastructure of each company can vary. However, it’s always worth checking with your florist to get a better idea for his or her capacity – you might be surprised!

With that, I invite you to read on and learn various ways your wedding florist can help your daydreams come true.

Linens

Stuck on which color tablecloth to pair with your gorgeous aqua and pink-inspired centerpieces? We can advise you on which colors to steer toward, which patterns to avoid – we can even show you swatch options.

Wondering where to get those linens? Never fear, we can handle that, too. From sourcing the perfect linen to coordinating the set up, we can take the hassle and worry out of your hands.

Today’s couples look for special furniture items to set her wedding apart. From an amazing accent mirror to hang over the guestbook table to specialty chairs for your bride and groom table, our florists are up on the latest trends and can help you choose your favorites. We can even source and coordinate setup of the options you decide on.

Lighting

Looking for a specialty crystal chandelier to hang from the center of your super-chic barn venue? We can help you source it.

Thinking about up-lighting, too? Ask us for our best advice on hues that would work well for your overall wedding look.

In most cases, we will be able to coordinate the installation of these items as well, saving you lots of stress, worry, and back-and-forth phone calls between vendors.

Place Card Table

Any florist can help you formulate a creative and unique place card concept based around your theme.

Going for an upscale wedding with a woodland feel? Why not have a miniature tree built of fresh-cut branches and blooming greenery as the focal point of your table.

Looking for something non-floral? We are happy to source your design items and curate the installation process on the big day.

Referrals

Of course, more than anything, we as wedding florists want to be helpful to you. Always feel free to make good use of our years of experience by asking for great referrals for photographers, bakers, day-of coordinators, and more.

The average wedding vendor has met many other vendors throughout the years, and we are always happy to offer our advice.

Florists can advise you and assist you with all of this, and so much more. For example, here at Keitha Thomas Designs we can source unique rentals and props – we can even handcraft customized guest table numbers that match the rest of your table setting.

The bottom line is that when it comes to anything design-related, the modern-day florist is often a useful, informed, and creative resource.

Our goal is to help you achieve the wedding you’ve always dreamed of, so be sure to reach out often with your questions!

We're starting our week off with this incredibly soft and romantic vineyard inspiration by David Abel Photography. From a modern elegant bridal gown to the foraged greens, we love it all. If you are inspired by classically elegant details, you will find tons of pretty here.

When first approaching the Ashton Creek Vineyard, there was no doubt in our minds that this shoot needed to feel deeply inspired by the serene scenery and lush landscape. DESIGN/making the difference

Richmond, VA Event designer

What Do Designers Do Exactly?

What's your color scheme? Do you have a theme? How do you want your wedding to look and feel? You will be sure to hear these questions dozens of times as you talk to friends, family, vendors, and even curious strangers! It can be a little overwhelming right? Even if you have a vision in mind, it can sometimes be difficult to express what you want, or narrow down the choices. Event Designers are here to answer those questions with/for you! We help to manage selections of wedding decor and design elements that will bring together the look and feel of your whole wedding so it's special for you and looks blog worthy!

Why Do I Need Design?

If you find yourself gushing over blogs and galleries, noticing that bold typeface font that's seen on the wedding invitations, menus, and the welcome signs - or notice that lovely shade of blush that's in the flowers, linens, AND even the champagne- you have an eye and love for the details! And nine out of ten times, you are admiring the work of an event designer. There are so many moving pieces to wedding day, and a designer ensures that each and every one of those pieces will work together and represent YOU. It’s the little details that make an event special, and it's those little details that really make the difference!

Our Style

At Keitha Thomas Designs  we have our own flare and personality. We love flowers and lots of them! Our compositions are lush and flower heavy, with fewer greens. We like our arrangements to be a little flirty and feminine as we combine the delicate balance of being both organic and full. Each arrangement will look slightly different, highlighting the nature of each flower.

Our Creative Process

We start with the overall feeling that you'd like to establish at your wedding, In keeping true to our goal of creating a wedding that represents you and only you, we will pull inspiration from all aspects of your life. Is there a favorite place you like to vacation, a sentimental flower from your childhood, what kind of jewelry do you wear? These are details to consider when composing your floral landscape. After a lengthy conversation (hopefully over coffee or wine!) We will choose blooms and color pallets that will be authentic to you!

Investment

The overall budget of your floral design will depend greatly on the market prices of desired blooms, selected vessels, location, and number of arrangements required.

DC. Wedding Designer: Behind the Scenes

DC Wedding Designer: Behind the Scenes: What Your Wedding Florist Really Does

Today we’re bringing you behind the scenes, and sharing a little insight into the time, creativity and logistics that go into every single wedding we work on (and we left out all the admin and early mornings!).

So many couples ask us why florists charge what they do for weddings, I think when you read this, you'll have a good idea…

As we end one wedding season and look forward to all the new brides and grooms-to-from over the holidays, I’m thinking about something that’s never far from my mind: wedding flowers.

Specifically, I realize more and more that the world of wedding flowers and wedding floristry can sometimes be a place of misconception and confusion for wedding-planning couples. With all of the different elements of a wedding to think about (and the associated price tags), it’s easy to lose sight of what it’s all about.

However, a wedding truly is a once-in-a-lifetime event, a unique moment in time where those you love join under one roof to celebrate your commitment to one beloved person.

And while it takes many elements to make for a memorable event, décor is certainly an important one.

Décor helps set a tone and mood for the wedding that is all your own, achieved through thoughtful touches like candle lighting, linens, and of course, flowers.

And I would say that flowers in particular are a very special part of décor – bringing in the beauty of nature, tailoring elements to help bring across your specific vision – that’s an opportunity that occurs very infrequently in life.

“So, what actually goes into one single centerpiece or bouquet?,” you might be wondering.I invite you to step behind the scenes with me.

Understanding the Vision

Richmond Event Designer, Virginia Event Designer,  Virginia wedding florist,  Wedding planning, event planning

The most important aspect for any wedding florist is the couple’s vision, first and foremost. Executing and fulfilling your vision to a tee is the most satisfying feeling in the world to us in the floral business. So, understanding your design scheme inside and out is ofcourse most important to our process.

Detailed proposals will be prepared after in-depth, in-person conversations, as well as many emailed Pinterest links and completed client questionnaires!

The Nitty-Gritty

In the months and weeks leading up to the wedding day, it is the florist’s goal to fine-tune the proposal as much as possible – again, with the end goal of perfectly presented wedding flowers.

The time between a client signing and the wedding day is an important period of time, wherein we make note of any updates, from simple things like a change in table counts, to big-picture items, like a change from low centerpieces to tall centerpieces.

We are there along the way to make sure we have all the logistical details we need to make sure setup goes off without a hitch.

And we are of course on hand to offer guidance should a bride or groom run into a conflict as far as overall décor scheme goes – sometimes, visions change, and we’re happy to help steer the way to a new plan.

The Artistic Process

Wedding Flowers, Richmond, Weddings, DC weddings,

A part of wedding flower planning that doesn’t often get discussed, this is also one of my favorite aspects – this is the part where your flowers first start to “bloom” and take life!

In the week leading up to the wedding, it’s time to create a flower “recipe”, a comprehensive list that details each and every bloom and choice greenery items that will be used to create your wedding floral.

The recipe is prepared in consultation with trusted contacts at the flower market to ensure certain specialty blooms are available and looking good the week of your wedding.

Once the list is prepared, we head to the market to hand pick the blooms, choosing them by a combination of touch and sight. Only the hardiest, highest quality flowers are selected, and substitutions to the recipe are made on-site if certain blooms don’t turn out to be up to snuff.

Petal” to the Metal

Virginia Florist, Richmond Florist,  Flowers, Floral designer, Event Design

Of course, there can be no wedding flowers without some serious hands-on work!  Once flowers have been chosen from the market and processed at the studio (cleaned, trimmed, and hydrated), the actual act of arranging comes into play. The studio is a frenzy of cut stems and loose greenery, until finally, all these various parts come together to form your beautiful bouquet or centerpiece.

Wedding Time!

The final crucial aspect of the wedding flower process is setting up the flowers on-site, exactly as discussed. Arbors are built, centerpieces are placed, candles are lit, and the couple is handed their flowers. I will never forget the look of joyful surprise when a bride first sees her flowers! That, combined with her           pre-married “glow”, make the wedding setup an unbelievably fun, heartwarming, and memorable part of the process. This is just a brief sneak peek into the “real world” of wedding flowers, but as you can see, it is a world filled with energy and care.

I hope this is a source of information and inspiration for you as you embark into the world of weddings!

The Difference Between Planners and Designers

Explaining The Difference Between Planner and Designers

I empathize with most clients who aren’t sure about the difference between what wedding planners do and what wedding designers do.
These two services have become so interchangeable that most of the time, it’s difficult to tell them apart.
Not to mention the local banquet managers from hotels and venues who do not hesitate to tell clients they don’t need a planner. It’s no wonder clients are confused about who does what.
So here's the difference between the two:

Virginia event designer, Virginia Floral designer, Richmond event designer, Richmond floral designer, NYC floral designer, NYC event designer, Florist, weddings, Richmond weddings, DC weddings, NYC weddings,  wedding tables cape, wedding flowers

Wedding Planner

A wedding planner is well-versed in wedding coordination, budget allocation, and the best wedding professionals for your budget.  Handling the details of your wedding, this pro has great relationships with area professionals and can also often get you discounts or add-ons.  From day-of coordination to guidance every step of the way, a wedding planner will usually customize his or her services to best meet your needs. A wedding planner is often your best advocate and as someone impartial to a venue or church, they have no ones interest in mind but your own.
A wedding planner’s work begins months before your wedding day. She’s the one to contact once the ring is on your finger and you’re ready to make your dream wedding day a reality. In addition, many wedding planners also act as wedding coordinators since they are highly involved with the planning process and understand your wants and needs for your big day.

Event Designer

While a wedding planner is strongest in the logistics and planning of your wedding, an event designer shines when designing the aesthetics of your wedding.  This is where the 'wow' factor comes in.  An event designer doesn't just refer you to stationery or favor companies, but has the ability to create things from scratch.  If you're envisioning a die-cut wooden cursive sign hanging above your custom wedding altar made of vintage doors and wrought iron gates, an event designer is the one who can make this a reality.  A great event designer has all of the tools to create the details to make your wedding unique, from a workshop to electronic cutting machines and the inside scoop on where to find the right props for the job.  In addition to floral design, Keitha Thomas Designs specializes in event design, ensuring your wedding has that 'wow' factor that is otherwise hard to achieve.

By definition; an event designer is someone who will design and execute an overall look for an event.  A great designer is bringing new and innovative ideas to the table and not just harvesting décor from existing media sources.

Event designers is responsible for understanding your wedding day vision and making it a reality. Event designers, like other professionals in the design field, create a “vision” for your wedding day. Much like an interior designer can take a client’s inspiration and create a whole room, an event designer can take your inspiration and create a whole event. Event designers work in close conjunction with floral designers, rental companies, and caterers to craft a truly custom event. In fact, many event designers also offer additional in house design services such as floral design or linen rentals. While there are differences between the roles and responsibilities of wedding coordinators, wedding planners, and event designers, many wedding professionals offer a mix of these services if not all three. Just remember to ask your wedding consultant exactly which services she offers, don’t just assume.

Here at Keitha Thomas Designs, as your wedding event designers, we will be the artist, idea-makers, and co-creators with you and together be the aesthetic visionaries behind the wedding event.  We will work with you on everything from selecting a color palette to creating a floor plan, choosing linens, furniture and other rentals, imagining, creating and installing the floral designs and even developing branding and personalization for the wedding event.  As wedding event designers, we also offer production services – meaning the actual manpower that brings the designs to life such as building centerpieces or manufacturing backdrops.

We will be the creative force with you, developing the concepts and ideas for your wedding that we will then produce. Give us a call today. We’d simply love to talk about your wedding day!

How To WOW Your Guests: Five Tablescape Golden Rules

The tables are the center of the room . Here's how to wow guests when they walk in.

1. Follow the rule of three Every element of the decor must be repeated at least three times in order for it to "sink in." Stick to just a few elements to repeat throughout the decor, so guest will actually notice your hard work.

2. Dress up your escort cards People love to see their names(seriously- they never get sick of it!). So hiring a calligrapher to write guest's names on the escort cards will make them feel truly welcome.

3.  Do a test- drive If you put down a deposit, any reputable florist will make  you a sample centerpiece. Then have your planner borrow or rent a table setting and linens so you can see how everything looks together.

4. Talk to your caterer Ask what they'll be putting on the tables. For example, if there will be four glasses at each setting, guests won't see a low centerpiece. To avoid crowding the tables, ask the caterer to bring new ( and clear the old) utensils before each course.

5. Update your centerpiece You can totally change the look of flowers by placing them in a colored or uniquely shaped vessels. Surround centerpieces with votives candles for a inexpensive way to add extra light, which makes everything look better.

INTRODUCING KEITHA THOMAS DESIGNS

KEITHA THOMAS DESIGNS, VIRGINIA FLORAL DESIGNER, VIRGINIA FLORIST, VIRGINIA WEDDINGS, DC WEDDINGS, DC FLORAL DESIGNER, DC FLORIST, EVENTS DESIGN, NY WEDDINGS, NY FLORAL DESIGNER, NY FLORIST

New Name: New Brand: Same Quality

Love often comes in like a slow dawn, and so does growing up. Life is comfortable, and everything fits well, and then one day you wake up to find that you’ve outgrown what used to fit perfectly. When we’re young, that means buying new clothes and shoes, and learning how to deal with scrawny limbs. Once we’re older, it means making changes, being willing to move on from what was once comfortable into something new, because the old doesn’t quite fit anymore.

That is precisely how I came to rebrand. “Zahara’s Events + Design” was a wonderful business name, brand, and identity that served me well for six years. But just as a girl growing into womanhood finds her taste and style changes with time, so I have changed.

And now, after two years of branding worksheets, design comps, pages and pages of notes haphazardly scratched down whenever inspiration came, books read, countless conversations with friends, more brand evaluation, and many hours of work (and some tears), my new brand is finished, and the website and blog are live. Honestly, I can’t begin to express how happy I am with the design, and how at well-styled and home my work looks here. Don’t you agree?

I’ll write a bit more in coming days about this process, but for now, let’s just enjoy looking, shall we? My designer Sofia Boyer, is a genius, by the way. She took all of my crazy dreams and hopes and wishes and random notes and Pinterest boards and created something cohesive and absolutely perfect. There’s certainly no one else to whom I would entrust my brand identity, and she fully delivered on everything… and then some.

But honestly? This website and brand would be nothing at all without the amazing people who believe in me, trust me, support me, and inspire me— my clients. Friends, without you, this business is nothing but a dream-turned-joke. That you would trust me with the privilege of designing your wedding, that is an honor I never take lightly. Thank you for your support over the years. It truly does mean the world to me.

I hope this gives you some insight on why we have made this huge change.  It is with open arms and a full heart, that I welcome you to Keitha Thomas Designs.  Please click around, and get to know us!
